February Member Of The Month

By: 0

Congratulations to our February member of the month, Ben Palmer! We asked Ben a little bit about his experience at CFBT – this is what he shared
Q: How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
A: I started at Boomtown in January 2016 after about 2 years of convincing from my girlfriend who has been at Boomtown for 5+ years. My biggest obstacle for joining was the cost, but once I started I was hooked and the benefits here at Boomtown more than justify the cost.
Q: What is your favorite thing about the gym?
A: I have 2 favorite things about the gym, first and foremost is the programming and coaches. Matt takes the time to put together thoughtful strength training and conditioning that produces actual results, not just throw together some CrossFit movements and call it a “WOD”. In addition to the programming, the coaches at Boomtown really know the how and why of the exercises we do and make sure we are moving well to maximize our results while reducing our risk of injury. The second is the community. CrossFit in general is a community, and Boomtown’s community is second to none. The coaches and members care about your personal success, in and out of the gym, and they’re always there to encourage you to do and be your best self.

Q: What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
A: I can’t think of any major challenges I’ve overcome.
Q: What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
A: A favorite moment is tough, there have been a lot of them. Any time the community comes together for a hero workout, a charity workout, a wedding or baby WOD, you are sure to be exhausted by the end of it but you’ll have a sense of accomplishment when it’s over and you’ll feel closer to those who sweat along side you. Plus there are bound to be plenty of laughs and high fives going on throughout.
Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
A: The beauty of counting macros, whether you’re strict about it or just use it as a guide like I do, is that you don’t have to “cheat” to eat the things you like. You can adjust your day or week to make room for the less healthy options that taste oh so good. That being said, pizza and ice cream are pretty high on the list. Homemade pizza on Flatout pizza crusts and Yasso frozen yogurt bars are a pretty good compromise without killing my day.

Q: What’s your Favorite activity outside the gym?
A: I enjoy getting outside. I play softball and golf in the summer, and I like to hike and kayak.
Q: What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
A: If you’re thinking about giving CrossFit a try, do it. It’s not $10 a month or $100 for the year like you’ll find at some other gyms, and that’s kind of the point. I’ve been a member at regular gyms where I did my own “programming” which meant I grabbed some crap from the internet and started doing it. It lasted a couple months then I stopped going. I didn’t have anyone holding me accountable, I didn’t have anyone making sure I was doing it right, and I certainly didn’t have a knowledgeable person putting time and effort into a training regiment that would get me where I wanted to be. CrossFit is a financial commitment, but you’re worth it.

Q: What drives you?
A: I’m a bit of a competitive person, so when I see others improving at the gym it motivates me to improve as well. I have no delusions of being the fittest, fastest or strongest person at the gym, but I like the idea of being fitter, faster and stronger than I was yesterday.
Q: Which coach do you like to beat in workouts?
A: It’s a rare day that I actually beat any of the coaches, and if I do it’s usually because they’re not at 100%. Just being in the conversation is nice once in a while. That being said, the CrossFit Open is coming up soon and anything could happen.

Q: What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
A: I never had any hard and fast fitness goals when I started at the gym. I wanted to lose some weight, I wanted to put on some muscle and I wanted to improve my conditioning. Currently my “goals” are maintaining consistency in attendance, consistency with my nutrition, and good form with my movements to continue to build strength and avoid injury.

Member Of The Month For January

By: 0

A new year, A new member of the Month. We are excited to announce Meg Adanti Is CrossFit Boomtown’s January Member of the month. She comes in ready to work and with a smile on her face day in and day out.  Over the past few months Meg has made some major strides in her movement progressions and her fitness level.

*How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?*

I started at Boomtown in August 2016, so just about 16 months thus far 🙂

*What is your favorite thing about the gym?*

My favorite thing about the gym?  There are so many things I love about the gym…  I guess I’ll narrow it down and say I love the people and the programming!

*What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?*

My biggest challenge was learning all the terminology that comes along with Crossfit – Thruster, Snatch, Clean etc. and then it was learning the right way to do each movement.  Taking Zach’s Barbell camp REALLY helped supplement what I was learning in the day-to-day classes.

*What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?*

The first thing that came to my mind when I think of favorite moments in the gym are the partner workouts my husband Seth and I have done together.  He really pushes me and inspires me to do the best I can when we partner up for WOD’s.  I remember doing this crazy WOD with him where we had to row and he really motivated me to go faster and farther on the rower than I would have been able to do without him 🙂

*What’s your favorite “cheat” food? *

I love pizza. I also love cookies and cookie dough. Oh and I LOVE peanut butter (like I probably need therapy to deal with my LOVE of peanut butter!).

*What’s your Favorite activity outside the gym?*

I love running in the woods in the fall and winter.  I still like it in the spring/summer, but the damn bees really put a damper on things in the warmer weather. I do run faster when I see other people get stung though!

*What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?*

DO IT! My whole life style has changed for the much, much better since I started Crossfit. Step outside of your comfort zone and give it a try.  The people at Boomtown really are the best.  Everyone is supportive.  It was one of the best decisions I have ever made!

*What drives you?*

I want to be the healthiest and fittest version of myself that I can be. I have been a Nutrition client of Melissa’s since December 2016.  Working with her has taught me so much about how what I eat impacts not only how I perform in the gym, but also how I feel and what I am able to take on in my day to day life. I am learning new things about nutrition and exercise every day. I now look at my life as a journey.  On that journey I hope to keep improving myself and inspiring other people to do the same, especially my children, family and friends.

*Which coach do you like to beat in workouts?*

Beat? That would mean I need to keep an accurate count of reps and rounds in WOD…LOL!   No, but for real, I’m not there to compete with anyone else but myself.  The coaches motivate the hell out me, though. I want to be more like them when I grow up 🙂

*What is your biggest fitness goal right now?

My biggest fitness goal right now is to continue to get stronger and leaner (is leaner a word?). I want to feel stronger all the time whether that be during a WOD at Crossfit, carrying my 5 year old son on my shoulders through the zoo, or running up an insanely steep hill in the woods. Just in general, I want to the strongest and fittest version of myself that I can be!

Member Of The Month For December

By: 0

Tom is one of the most dedicated members at CFBT. Tom  participates in all events, social and competitive. He always comes in and does an amazing job! He stays after, works on his weaknesses. Most importantly he’s always welcoming to new members, too.

  1. *How long have you been a member and how long
    have you been doing CrossFit?*.

I joined C.F.B.T. in March of this year. I had no previous experience with CrossFit.  I used to workout at Aquinas and after that I attempted to make a home gym… which didn’t work out, literally and figuratively.

  1. *What is your favorite thing about the gym?*

First and foremost I love the community. Starting with Chad, Melissa and the coaches, to the O.G’s all the way down to the rookies like myself. Its a fun group to be around. I also really enjoy the programming and all the extras B.T. has to offer.

  1. What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?*

Showing up for the Catalyst Games. I was asked 1 week before to be on a team to do something I knew nothing about with like 3 months of CrossFit under my belt. I had never even seen CrossFit games on T.V.  Yeah I was bugging out a little bit wondering WTF I got myself into. In the end it was totally worth it.

  1. *What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?*

There’s a bunch of awesome moments. Too many to list. However working out next to Ashley in her inflatable T-Rex costume on Halloween is the most I ever laughed during a workout. I’m not even sure how she did most of that WOD. The arms were like 12″ long.

  1. *What’s your favorite “cheat” food? *

I can get down with some Chinese food. Its so bad but so good. And a beer or 6.

  1. *What’s your Favorite activity outside the gym?*

Living life with family and friends.. Whether its skiing or snowboarding, hiking mtns, carrying heavy shit through the woods at weird hours of the night, or just hanging out shooting the breeze. Family and friends is where its at for me.

  1. *What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?*

The hardest part is walking through the door the first time and making the commitment. The physical part will come as long as your mind is right.

  1. *What drives you?*

I have to be challenging myself constantly. I have to be better then I was yesterday.  I can’t sit around doing nothing for very long or I get a little “anxious”. My wife will attest to that. I’m at my best when I have a task or a purpose to focus on.

  1. *Which coach do you like to beat in workouts?*

I don’t check the leader board so I never know where I stand…. Yeah right… I want to beat all of them at some point. If I had to pick one it would be Chad. That’s just cause he’s an owner of the gym.

  1. What is you biggest fitness goal right now?

I’m going to complete a Go ruck H.T.L. in 2018. It’s a Heavy, Tough, Light back to back to back. It will be roughly 48 hrs and 70 miles of good living. Its going to be horrible in such a good way.. And I have about 10 months to get ready for it.

Member Of The Month November – Kayla Hartz

By: 0

Here is our M.O.M For November! Congratulations To kayla. Keep up all your hard work.
*How long have you been a member and how long
have you been doing CrossFit?*
I’ve been a member of CFBT for a year and a half, but I started CrossFit in DC two years ago. After a year of persuasion, Kyle successfully convinced me to give it a try. (It helped that my job moved to a building with a CrossFit gym that ran a half-off special for our whole office!)
*What is your favorite thing about the gym?*
The programming is top-notch and intentional. Not only are you are guaranteed a good work out every time you walk through the door, you can also bet you’ll work on skills that will help your performance in some other way.
I also can’t not mention the people. Boomtown is like one large, fun, rowdy family always ready to cheer you on whether you’re first or last.

*What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?*
Double unders! Those pesky things haunted me. I’m still not great at them, but I can at least do a few in a row now. (Thanks to Zach’s workshop!)

*What is your favorit moment at the gym so far?*
Mine and Kyle’s Game of Thrones baby WOD! It was a tough workout (thanks, Meg!), but really fun. I especially enjoyed watching the brave few who decided to do the workout with a weight vest so they could feel what it’s like to workout with a little extra weight.
Plus, the workout seemed to be just what we needed to get Friedrich here; he was born less than 48 hours later. 🙂
*What’s your favorite “cheat” food? *
Nachos with about 50lbs of cheese and guac.
*What’s your Favorite activity outside the gym?
Aerial silks. I’ve done aerial silks for almost 4 years and actually decided to do CrossFit so that I could be better at it. I had to take a break during my pregnancy (wrapping your stomach in fabrics and diving 15 ft isn’t recommended during pregnancy), but I’m back at it twice a week now.
*What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?*
It’s going to be hard and you’re not going to be good at everything. It’s going to take a while to learn all of the movements. Some people in the gym are really, really good, but that’s not a reason to be intimidated (they’ve worked hard!). You can scale any movement. The coaches genuinely want to help you. Once you get in a groove, you’re going to have a lot of fun with it and see improvements in your body that will positively impact the rest of your life. What do you have to lose?
*What drives you?*
I truly believe that in order to live a fulfilling life and maximize the human experience, you must have a healthy mind, body, and spirit. If one is unhealthy, the other two will suffer. CrossFit pushes me and allows me to unearth my body’s potential. Because of this, every aspect of my life has been more rewarding and fulfilling.
In short, living my best life is what drives me.
*Which coach do you like to beat in workouts?*
That’s a funny question because I don’t think that’s ever happened! I do try to stay on pace with Amanda because I think she has an incredible ability to set a pace and stick with it.
*What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
I want to focus on Olympic lifting right now because of how physically and mentally challenging those movements are for me.
Because I enjoy concrete, measurable goals: I want to be able to confidently do a 95lb snatch by the open and would like to try doing the open RX this year.

August Member Of The Month

By: 0

We are proud to announce Darnell as our August Member Of the month! Congratulations Darnell!

You may have seen him in the morning classes busting his butt, or in the afternoon classes  running with his son during the warm up.  Read on to learn about about Darnell, his real life struggles,  and how he turned them around, all while setting a great example for his son.

*How long have you been a member and how long
have you been doing CrossFit?*

I started CrossFit when I became a member at Boomtown.  I believe that was in February.  So approximately 6 months now.

*What is your favorite thing about the gym?*

There’s a lot I like about Boomtown.  My favorite things would have to be the programs designed for us and the whole vibe the coaches and members bring.  It’s incredibly positive and motivating.

*What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?*

My biggest challenge has definitely been learning patience.  There’s so much I want to be able to do, and definitely times where I feel that I can’t keep up.  But since joining I’ve learned to stay positive and keep at it, not to try to rush my progress or keep up with the gentlemen or ladies next to me.

*What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?*

My favorite moment at the gym has got to be this particular day we were doing overhead holds with the barbell.  I brought my son Tyberius this day and I remember looking at him after I had just finished accumulating my 2 minutes.  I saw him through the window to the play room and he was doing push presses with a kid’s barbell and loving it.  Lol.  That was awesome!  At that moment, I really felt like I was setting a great example for him.

*What’s your favorite “cheat” food? *

Has to be a tie between pizza and ice cream.  I’ve got a problem.

*What’s your Favorite activity outside the gym?*

Spending father/son time with my son.  Whether we’re having water gun fights, reading comic books together or play fighting.  And reading.  Usually non-fiction but I am a huge James Patterson fan.
*What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?*

I would say, “You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.  Boomtown has great, friendly and knowledgeable coaches and awesome members.  The atmosphere is fantastic and there’s no pressure.  You’ll only be pushed to do YOUR best, not someone else’s.”

*What drives you?*

That feeling of accomplishment after completing a difficult task.  Specific to fitness, I just love feeling physically capable to do almost anything.  I spent roughly 13 years struggling with drugs and alcohol, in and out of rehab and cop cars; watching my life fall apart before my eyes.  During that time my body was frail and wasting away.  Little things like running up a flight of stairs left me winded.  A year ago I couldn’t do 3 pull-ups.  I felt incredibly weak and incapable.  I never want to feel that way again.  Plus, I want to set a positive example for my son, Ty.  I want to show him that you can reach any goal you can set.  When I was at my lowest that boy still looked up to me like I was a superhero.  So I want to be the superhero he always thought I was by staying positive and giving everything I’ve got to reach my goals.

*What is you biggest fitness goal right now?

My biggest fitness goals right now are to be able to do 20 straight pistol squats on each leg, 5 pull-ups with 90 lbs of weight added, and 5 strict one-arm pushups.

July Member Of The Month

By: 0

Kathleen came into the gym saying one thing, “I want to move”. Since then she has progressed leaps and bounds. She has been consistent from day one working on strength, mobility and nutrition, being sure to use all of these tools to help her achieve her goals. Here is a little bit about our July Member of the month. Keep on moving Kathleen. We are very proud of you!

*How Long have you been doing CrossFit?*

I have been doing CrossFit for about 6 months.

*What is your favorite thing about the gym?*

My favorite thing about the gym is the diversity. I love the  different workouts and equipment.

*What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?*

My biggest challenge was, to get up off the couch and move! That was six months ago and I am still moving.

*What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?*

There have been so many moments, but the moment I was finally able to do a push up was the best.  I haven’t been able to do them for     years.

*What’s your favorite “cheat” food? *

Lately it has been Ice cream

*What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?*

Simple, just start!

*What drives you?*

The thought of being 80 or 90 yrs. old and still on my feet.

*What is your biggest fitness goal right now?*

My biggest fitness goal right now is to increase my mobility.

Member’s of the Month for June

By: 0

As CrossFitter’s we revel in the idea of new Firsts. Even as a community firsts are big accomplishments for us! We are proud to announce a first for CrossFit Boomtown. Congratulation’s to Anne and Jimmy! As  they are our First couple member of the month. They both came in giving 110%. You could find them constantly learning and asking question to work on movements or skills. Plus submersing themselves into the community. Here are some fun facts and pictures to prove it

*How Long have you been doing CrossFit?*

Jimmy: I started in August 2016
Anne: I started in June 2016. Wow! It’s been almost a year

*What is your favorite thing about the gym?* –

Jimmy: The positive atmosphere. I always want to do more. When I see someone trying a heavier kettle bell it makes me motivated to try a heavier one too. The coaches are great too!
Anne: I absolutely agree. I love that everyone’s pushing themselves and encouraging others at whatever level they are at. Even though some folks make things look easier than they are, the atmosphere makes it ok to work hard and try something challenging, even if it means I might have to bail on a lift or stumble into a box–I never feel like I’m the only one struggling on my own.

*What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?*

Jimmy: Learning the lingo and remembering all the different movements.
Anne: Getting started and making the time and money commitment to do something good for myself was hard. I felt a little guilty at first. After a year, I can assure you it’s worth every minute and every penny. It was the best thing I could have done for myself. Being healthy isn’t frivolous.

*What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?* –

Jimmy: Going from not able to do one strict pull-up to doing 10 strict pull-up during an assessment in January. The CrossFit open was a ton of fun too. Mickie was an excellent partner who drove me to give it my all. Can’t wait for the 2018 Open.
Anne: It’s hard to pick one moment, but I’d probably have to go with getting my first strict pull-up. I have never been able to do them, and it was such a feeling of accomplishment, where I felt “Wow. My body is capable of doing so much more than I thought if I just work at it.”

*What’s your favorite “cheat” food? * –

Jimmy: Ridge Donuts
Anne: Ice Cream and Cheese

*What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?*

Jimmy: Just do it, you won’t regret it. When I started I was a little intimated. I’m pretty scrawny so seeing all these guys with lots of muscles was scary at first, but they’re all really nice guys.
Anne: Give it a try–for at least a month. Your body will be so angry with you at first. You will be super sore and it will feel like this can’t possibly be good for you. But it is. You just have to wake your muscles up from hibernation, and slowly you’ll go from feeling bad to feeling really good.

*What drives you?* –

Jimmy: Besides my car, at the end of the day it’s just really fun, I can’t can’t wait to go back! Anne’s a great motivator too
Anne: It’s sooooo much fun. Every day is different, there are always new things to learn, and everyone there is awesome. I miss going after even a day or two off.

*What is you biggest fitness goal right now?*

Jimmy: Doing better at barbell movements. Need to start coming on Tuesdays and do a barbell camp as well. Would love to master the sexy bear crawl (Ask Chad to demonstrate, still waiting on this seminar)
Anne: I want to work on everything, but specifically a focus to improve my bodyweight movements, and have better balance and motor control. I’m shooting for a handstand within the next year.

May Member Of The Month

By: 0

Hilda Saltos

We are excited to announce Hilda Saltos as our May Member of the month. From day one Hilda hit the ground running, literally . This would have been enough to deter anyone from joining, but not Hilda. She has become a stellar member in our community. You can find her encouraging other members in the 6:15am class or gathering a crowd to do burpees at the holiday party. Hilda we are very proud of you. The CFBT staff and community is excited to see what the next year brings for you.

*How Long have you been doing CrossFit?*

I’ve been a member for 16 months (who’s counting?) so I’ve been doing CrossFit for the same amount of time.

*What is your favorite thing about the gym?*

Definitely the camaraderie. Everyone is so supportive, coaches and members alike. I can tell that the coaches genuinely love what they do and want to help us grow.

*What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?*

Easy. Fear. This shit scared the hell out of me so I wasn’t consistent. I would talk myself out of it every day. Then one day late last year, I decided I was going to stop being scared. Or at least stop letting my fear stop me.

*What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?*

Definitely 17.4. My first Open. I wanted to die about 30 wall balls in. I had nothing in me until I heard one of the coaches next to me telling me to remember To Keep the balls at my face. Tea bag! It was the only thing I could think about. It was the right thing to get me laughing and re-energized.

*What’s your favorite “cheat” food? *
Pizza

*What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?*

It will definitely test you. Just keep going, even when you think you are going to die. You won’t. The coaches won’t let you. I always remember what Meg said, “Your mind will quit before your body will.” So. True.

*What drives you?*

Kicking my fear’s ass. I was so busy being scared that I wasted a lot of time. Every time I get scared by a challenging workout, I just do my best and it feels so good when I’m done.

*What is you biggest fitness goal right now?*

I definitely want to keep getting better. I have two goals – improving my technique/knowledge of mechanics, and weight loss. I can feel how much my body has changed for the better since starting. I want to keep that momentum going.
