April Member of The Month
We are excited to announce Erika as Member of the month for April! She comes in ready to work and with a smile on her face day in and day out. Over the past few Months Erika has made some major strides in her movement progressions and her fitness level.
Q: How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
A: I joined Boomtown about a year and a half ago and this is my one and only experience doing CrossFit.
Q: What is your favorite thing about the gym?
A: I really like the community aspect of the gym. There’s always a friendly face to greet you when you walk in, coaches asking how your day is, everyone encouraging you to push yourself and high fives after a hard workout.
Q: What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
A: It can be challenging to balance a full time job, a busy/active family and stay consistent in the gym. I have to make a conscious effort each and every day to make it priority and fit it in.
I also have had 3 knee surgeries (2 ACL reconstructions and 1 meniscus) and was told by a doctor never to run, play contact sports or do anything causing high impact to my knees. Since I don’t like to be told “you can’t”, I decided to train and run a 1/2 marathon, played roller derby and then joined CrossFit. Last summer I also tackled the Tough Mudder. My knees have never felt better since starting CrossFit and I think it’s because all the muscles around them keep getting stronger. I also suffer from a thyroid autoimmune disorder that affects my energy level, metabolism and causes muscle soreness/joint stiffness. About a year ago, I did a complete change of my nutrition to eating clean and tracking macros after a consultation with Melissa. Since then, I have been feeling more energetic, losing weight slowly and gaining muscle, which is super encouraging!
Q: What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
A: Probably this year’s CrossFit Open for a few different reasons. Last year I was relatively new to CrossFit and didn’t really know what to expect or what The Open was all about. Not only did I love the challenge of this year’s Open, but the camaraderie, community and energy at the gym was awesome. It was a lot of fun watching others achieve their firsts and cheering them on. Also, I achieved my first kipping pull up and got a PR for a clean, which I’m really proud of!!
Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
A: Anything with cheese on it, especially Mexican food.
Q: What’s your Favorite activity outside the gym?
A: Snowboarding, hiking, running, coaching Girls on the Run
Q: What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
A: Don’t be intimidated. CrossFit really is for anyone and everyone. Coaches are really knowledgeable and will meet you at any level you’re at.
Q: What drives you?
A: I love being active, it keeps me balanced. I’ve basically been active my entire life and wouldn’t know what to do with myself without some form of physical activity. I also love a challenge and am competitive at times, which is why CrossFit fits my needs perfectly.
Q: Which coach do you like to beat in workouts?
A: Um….I don’t think I’ve ever beat a coach in workouts, but I’m coming for you!! 😉
Q: What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
A: I’d like to be able to consistently do pull-ups and double-unders.
